Frequently Asked Questions

Lawns

Q: What is the proper mowing height to mow the lawns?
A: Typically our regular mowing height is three inches. We do not recommend mowing  lawns any lower than three inches; mowing lower causes lawns to burn out and stress quicker than lawns mowed at three inches.

Q: Does my lawn need to be mowed every week?
A: It is recommended that most lawns be mowed at least once a week, especially at the beginning of the season (April-June). However, as the season progresses, your lawn may not need to be mowed as frequently. This is based mainly on the amount of precipitation we receive throughout the season as well as how quickly the lawns are growing. We will not mow your lawn under severe dry conditions unless you specify otherwise.

Q: Our lawn seems to be cut differently each time it is cut: why is that?
A: If at all possible, your lawn should be cut at different angles and in different directions each time it is mowed. While this is predominantly done for the purposes of an attractive appearance, it also helps to avoid creating ruts in the lawn. Mowing at the same angle week after week will eventually create pits and ruts in your lawn.

Q: Why is my lawn still brown while other lawns are already green?
A:Each lawn is different. Sodded lawns typically take longer to come out of dormancy than a seeded, natural lawn. Untreated lawns also take longer to 'green up' than treated lawns. The amount of sun and water your lawn receives are also factors that influence this.

Q: Do you offer lawn treatments?
A: Yes we do. Please see our Lawn Services tab.

Q: What is lawn aerating and when should it be done?
A: Lawn aerating is one of the most common ways to help lawns that have suffered stress throughout the season, or lawns that are not growing well. Aerating your lawn consists of plugging your lawn with many holes, using a special tool. This will help in allowing new seed and fertilizer to go deeply into the roots of your lawn. Aerating is typically done in late summer or early fall (September-October)

Q: When is the best time of day to water?
A: The best time to water is in the morning. If you are unable to water in the morning, early evening is fine as well. You should never water in the middle of the day.

Q: How often and how long should I water my lawn?
A: You should water your lawn and shrubs for at least fifteen minutes, and watering should preferably be done in the morning hours. Depending on your lawn's size, watering times may vary. Please check with your local township for watering restrictions before watering, especially when we experiencing dry spells.

Flowers, Shrubs & Beds

Q: When is the best time of year to mulch?
A: Typically, the best time to mulch is in the Spring just before everything comes out of Winter dormancy and starts to bloom. You should also mulch whenever new shrubs/flowers are planted to cover up exposed soil. Doing so will prevent weeds from taking over your flowerbeds. You may, however, mulch at any time of year, even in the winter, as long the weather allows and products are available (most suppliers do not carry mulch past November).

Q: What types of mulch do you have available?
A: Mulches available to us are: Premium Bark mulch (dark brown in color and all natural), Dyed Black mulch (black in color — dye treated), and Dyed Brown mulch (brown in color — dye treated).

Q: How often should I mulch?
A: You should mulch at least once a year.

Q: Do you recommend mulching more than once a year?
A: Although we don't feel it is neccesary to mulch more than once a year (assuming mulching has been done properly), the decision to mulch more than once a year is solely based on the customer's preference. Our recommendation is that you mulch lightly over any areas where the mulch has been disturbed for one reason or another; this will prevent weeds from growing over exposed areas. If you plant flowers or shrubs in the spring and fall, we recommend these areas to be mulched as well.

Q: How do I determine what shrubs/flowers to use in my flowerbeds?
A: While there are many factors to consider when choosing shrubs and flowers for your garden, the two most important are: 1) whether the shrubs/flowers will thrive better in sun or shade; and, 2) whether they require moist or dry conditions. Usually shrubs and flowers have a care tag on them that will provide instructions and care tips.

Q: When is the best time of day to water?
A: The best time to water is in the morning. If you are unable to water in the morning, early evening is fine as well. You should never water in the middle of the day.
